The Latvian SS legion was created by the command of Nazi Germany. The Reichsführer of the SS Heinrich Himmler issued an order on March 24, 1943, clarifying the «Latvian Legion», as Latvians who serve in all local military formations of the Waffen-SS, including police battalions. Este 21 de diciembre de 2017, el Parlamento de un país de la Unión Europea, volverá a dejar en evidencia lo qué es en realidad dicha unión. En efecto, Letonia ha aprobado una ley para asignar el estatus de veterano de la Segunda Guerra Mundial a todos los letones que intervinieron durante esa contienda en ejércitos regulares, sin importar el bando para el que lucharan.
